***NEWS***

9/28/06: Our first couple meetings have gotten off to a great start this year! We look forward to working with Fair Wisconsin to defeat the Nov 7th Same-Sex Marriage and Civil Unions Ban by hosting a Social Work House Party in October. We are also planning on continuing our involvement with the Curriculum Committee and the Concentration Committees, as well as working with Faculty and Lecturers to bring speakers from the LGBT community into classrooms. We also hope to hold another Transgender 101 training this year. Stay tuned for details on these and other events!

9/5/06: Our Fall kickoff will be next Thursday, 9/12 at 12:10pm in room 229 Social Work Building. Hope to see you there!

8/24/06: Members of the LGBT social work/welfare group will be at the 2006 New Student Orientation for the School of Social Work next Wed, Aug 30th at the Biotechnology Auditorium.
Our Fall kickoff meeting is TBA, so join our Yahoo email list or watch for fliers around the SSW building! Hope to see you there!

3/9/06: Despite low attendance at our meeting today, we managed to plan the events we want to hold for the rest of the semester! Transgender 101 will be held 3/28/06 in room 300 Social Work from 4-6pm. Look for your bright green HRC booklet and a bookmark from us! We will have an LGBT SW group Par-tay at Union South on 4/4/06, starting at 5-ish. Also, earlier that day we will try and plan the Action Wisconsin Speaker (we still have to contact them about it) at noon in room 300 SW. Also Shelly and Bill Heiss are going to contact Florence Hilliard, who was looking for someone to do a presentation on LGBT AODA issues in her undergraduate SW class, and we decided to contact Action Wisconsin about their "Heterosexual Petition" to oppose the gay marriage ban, to be distributed prior to the AW speaker as promotion.

We are now our own Student Organization, registered with the SOO, so we might be moving to our own website soon!

3/6/06: HRC has agreed to donate enough of their "Transgender Americans" pamphlets for us to distribute them to all the Social Work grad student's and faculty/staff mail boxes! (this is approximately 350 pamphlets!) Look for that plus a Transgender 101 panel/dialogue coming soon!

Along with OutReach, we had a panel in SW 640 (SW with Racial and Ethnic Groups) about LGBT people of color. Despite the blizzard happening at the time, the dialogue went really well and we had a great discussion of the ways LGBT people of color cope with an often hostile environment, and how Social Workers can help make their experiences easier. Thanks to John and Petrovnia for speaking so openly about their experiences.

2/7/06: Last week we presented a letter to the Social Work Curriculum Committee regarding ways we feel they can improve the Social Work Curriculum with regards to LGBT issues. Specifically we requested greater integration of LGBT content, greater perspective of issues of sexuality and gender across the lifespan and the ways in which it intersects with other dimensions of diversity, and expanded knowledge of Bi and Trans issues, among other suggestions.

The Committee's response was positive and they would like us to attend the individual concentration meetings in the future to provide guidance. If you are interested in helping out with this effort, please contact me at dite@wineberry.net (Dite).

We are also planning on having a social gathering at Club 5 on 2/22/06 to see the MadKings (Madison's own Drag King Troupe) perform. We'll meet up around 10.

Other things in the works: Bringing a speaker, getting copies of the "Transgender Americans" pamphlet from the HRC to distribute and having a training on Trans issues for the School of SW, and more fun and exciting social events!
